Heart Art At Home: FLOW

INTRODUCTION

Hello and welcome to FLOW. On a weekly basis I will send you a link for an art process. Ideally time will allow you to follow the flow of one art process a week for six weeks. Should you fall behind, please don’t worry, there is always room for flexibility. Each lesson plan comprises of the following:

  • An introduction video
  • List of art materials and an art demonstration video
  • Guided visualisation sound clip
  • Reflection writing sound clip

ART MATERIALS

Click here for the Art Materials List. Watch the video below for an explanation of the materials.

NOTE: Please give yourself creative license and flexibility here. If you do not wish to purchase art materials, use what you have at home: printing paper, makeup, fabrics, recyclable goods … BEETROOT and TURMERIC make great colours to paint with! i.e. adapt the materials to fit your means.

CREATIVE COMMITMENT

If we were doing these sessions in-studio, we would have THREE HOURS from start to finish. Planning for Heart Art At Home is crucial. Commit to a length of time where you can be 100% present to meet yourself in the creative process. Block off a few hours, or spread your art making over a number of days. Avoid distractions. Make sure your cellphone is switched off and your family knows not to disturb you.

CREATIVE EXPECTATIONS

The aim of the creative process is to relinquish ALL expectation of what your art piece “should” look like. Let go of preciousness – allow yourself to be messy. You may end up creating abstract art – squiggles, lines, smudges, with no distinguishable features at all – that’s okay. Take risks, be daring, let yourself sit in the space of discomfort as you create. Feel your feelings and allow your feelings to be expressed through the act of art making.

JUDGEMENTS

Judgement stifles creativity – try not to judge yourself during the creative process. Remember there is no right or wrong way to make art. There are also no mistakes in art. Every mistake is an opportunity to do something in a new way, different from anything you ever thought of before. Be open to all possibilities, have fun, play and enjoy yourself.

INTERACTION: WHATSAPP GROUP

You will be invited to join a private WhatsApp group. This is where I will post the url link of the weekly lesson plan. It is also the platform to share your process with fellow participants. Once you have completed a lesson, you are invited to share your art piece and a short excerpt from your reflection writing with the group. Sharing your work is part of the process. It is an act of accountability, and it enables us to witnesses our own and each other’s journey.  Guidelines are set to keep WhatsApp posts to a minimum.

INTERACTION: ZOOM

Two Zoom check-ins will be scheduled: one mid-way through the course, and one following completion of the course. This is an opportunity for you to share your experience with fellow participants.

INTERACTION: PLAYDATES

Moving through the process and creating on your own may feel a little lonely. You may want to connect with fellow participants and arrange to create together: scheduling a day and time, connecting online, creating in your own space and thereafter, sharing your Reflections with each other. I am happy to be your match-maker and set you up with fellow art-makers.

COMMUNICATION

You may hit a speed bump along the way, or need help in dealing with self-judgement. Perhaps you have a logistics question or something you need clarification on. Please contact me directly, via WhatsApp or email gail@gailschoeman.com
